History
Vincent Hugo Bendix, founder of Bendix Aviation, bought the land northwest of South Bend in 1929 to bring air service closer to the city, and Bendix Municipal Airport opened in 1933. The city's earlier main airport had been Cadet Field in what is now Granger.
The airport was later called St. Joseph County Airport and then the Michiana Regional Transportation Center. It became South Bend Regional Airport on January 1, 2000, and South Bend International Airport on April 23, 2014. Its first scheduled jets arrived in January 1967: United Caravelles flying between Chicago O'Hare, South Bend, Fort Wayne and Newark.
