History

The airport opened on September 24, 1931 as Indianapolis Municipal Airport, replacing Stout Field as the city's primary airport. In 1944 it was renamed for Col. Harvey Weir Cook, a World War I flying ace with seven victories who died flying a P-39 over New Caledonia in World War II.

FedEx Express began its hub here in 1988. It is the world's second-largest FedEx hub, behind only the Memphis SuperHub. The current Col. H. Weir Cook Terminal opened for arrivals on November 11, 2008.
