History

Gary/Chicago International opened in 1954. It is a joint civil-military airport: an Army Aviation Support Facility for Indiana Army National Guard UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters sits on a former Cold War-era Nike missile battery site.

Several airlines have tried scheduled service here over the years, including Skybus Airlines, which folded in April 2008, and Allegiant Air, whose last scheduled flight was in August 2013. UPS Airlines began express cargo flights to Louisville in November 2020.
