History
Local aviator and businessman Thomas F. Hamilton established the airfield in 1920 as Hamilton Airport. Milwaukee County bought the land in 1926 and renamed it Milwaukee County Airport, and the first terminal opened in July 1927.
It became General Mitchell Field in 1941, honoring Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell, a Milwaukee native and air power advocate often called the father of the U.S. Air Force. During World War II part of the site was leased to the War Department and held more than 3,000 prisoners of war. The present terminal opened in 1955, and the airport took its current name, Milwaukee Mitchell International, in 2019.
